it goes without saying that Bob James is perhaps the most sampled jazz musician ever… this guy even rivals James Brown as all-time all-times.
so imagine my surprise when i heard “Take me to Mardi Gras” for the first time yesterday (ironically, a tuesday). read: this guy really thought he was a createhead - HA!
this Paul Simon orginial is the jaw-droppping orginal of Run-D.M.C.’s facimile, “Peter Piper”, not to mention LL Cool J’s “Rock the Bells”, the Beastie Boys’ “Hold it Now, Hit it”, Missy Elliott’s “Work It,” Will.i.am’s “I Got it from my Mama,”, “I Want You” from Common’s Finding Forever, and “Take It Back” from Wu-Tang Clan’s 8 Diagrams.
speaking of Paul Simon… did you know that he and Art Whatshisface were a rockabilly band back in the late 50’s? yep. true story… replete with the cheezey elvis rip off “uh huh huh” scat stuff. it’s not post worth, but keep that in your back pocket for trivia time.
